This lecture offers an introduction to the economic fundamentals of the insurance business. Along the value chain of insurance companies management issues are analyzed and discussed. Developments that are essential for the insurance industry, such as digitalization or the emergence of new risks, are discussed and examined in an economic context. Among the topics to consider are institutional foundations, insurance regulation, insurance distribution as well as current issues like the digital transformation of the insurance sector and the handling of cyber risks.
